John's passionate optimism
I will always remember John for his dedication to the cause of getting the message out about the toxicity of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the pervasive herbicide, Roundup. He persisted over the course of more than a year to finally be able to arrange an opportunity for me to speak at the University of Toronto on the subject of glyphosate and human health. He was such a gracious host for my trip to Toronto, and it was altogether a wonderful experience. It was the first time that I presented my hypothesis that glyphosate is substituting by mistake for glycine during protein synthesis. I think that is its key mechanism of toxicity and it is insidious, cumulative, and unpredictable in terms of what of many diseases it will lead to over time. John was a wonderful cheerleader in our little group of passionate anti-glyphosate scientists and activists. His optimism that we will eventually win this hard battle will stay with me forever.
